expensive and long treatment . Finally after the discussion,
The patient from Alaska, we need to
close the big gap in the upper teeth and the lower teeth and the top and
bottom are crooked, so after we change his top and bottom we had to make 16

The story of one of the patients that thrill
us most couldn’t be other than Kevin Fleming’s. He started as a
scared-to-death patient but finished as the happiest one. Kevin worked with
KBR in Iraq and after some years had passed those bombs and machine guns
scared him no more. He said he always think of those explosions around him
as some fireworks, although they annoyed him somehow because of their
deafening noises. Nobody would have expected what scared him most was the
dental chair, our tiny burs, sharp needles and the treatment as a whole. The
bombs blew up near him so many times his colleagues and those doctors in the
field who attended him so many times named him “Magnet” for attracting those
explosives too often. He was a regular client of the medical camp.
At one time he left some of his belongings with one of his friends whose
nickname was Dirty Bird before leaving Iraq for holidays and asked that guy
to keep it. That exact day the bomb blew up during Dirty Bird's mission
while he was wearing Kevin's stuff, so the guy didn’t want any possessions
of “Magnet” near him no more and threw those stuffs away into the trash.
Again, that night that trash bin was blown away completely. There might be
many more exciting episodes in Kevin’s life but for him coming to see us
here was the scariest one. However, it was the mission he could not avoid.
Most of his teeth were in trouble waiting to be rescued.
The types of treatment Kevin accepted here covered most subjects we learned
in Dentistry: extraction, filling, capping with the crowns, bridges, root
canal treatment, implants, etc. you name it, Kevin got it all. We couldn’t
say that all those treatment were accomplished so easily. It was a hard job
especially with the patient as scared as Kevin. But all went on smoothly and
after some sessions had passed and some works accomplished, Kevin sweated no
more. Moreover, because he had to come to see us each and everyday when he
was in Bangkok, Kevin and all our staffs had gain acquaintance and became
almost like a family. It’s true that Kevin’s face showed some traces of
hardships in his life, dangerous works, troubled family, but when he smiled
you would always feel the warmth glowing from his heart.
With Kevin’s good co-operation with the team of our staffs, he
could smile beautifully again. His smile then was even warmer than before
because of the brightness we had restored to his teeth from the damage ones.
Then, finally and also most important, Kevin’s attitude towards dental
treatment had changed completely. He was always happy to come to see us.
Unbelievably, he said he was always “counting the day” he could come back to
our clinic again when he was away from Thailand, not just for the treatment
but also to visit our staffs. He also regularly called from the battle field
to talk to us of which we were all so much appreciated.
With his smile and confidence back, we are certain that Kevin is moving on
toward a better life in the coming near future.
We all here would always pray for his safety and hope his warm and bright
smile would always give him good luck until the day he could come back to
see his friends here in Bangkok once again.
